Let’s Talk About Sports Safety With Our Optometrists In Manhattan Beach

Every year in the United States, at least 25,000 people seek medical treatment for sports-re lated eye injuries.[1] Our optometrists in Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach want all our patients--from varsity athletes to weekend warriors--to always practice good eye safety awareness during their sport of choice!

Common Sports-Related Eye Injuries Evaluated & Treated By Our Eye Doctors

Sports-related eye injuries most commonly occur in the following extracurricular activities:

  • Racquetball
  • Basketball
  • Baseball/Softball
  • Water polo

That said, accidents can happen at any time, in any activity, and to anyone of any age or skill level. This means that everyone should care about protecting their eyes during sports. Typical injuries include:

  • Scratched cornea
  • Penetrating injury
  • Orbital fracture
  • Detached retina
  • UV radiation injury

Even a "simple" black eye, while generally not considered serious, can be quite uncomfortable and cause temporary vision impairment--keeping you on the bench and struggling to see in your day-to-day life.

Top Eye Care Tips For The Active Person

  1. It's important to realize that regular eyeglasses don't provide enough protection to meet the demands of most sports. In fact, wearing regular glasses during high-risk sports (including anything with a ball, puck, stick, bat, or racquet), may increase the severity of an eye injury, if a piece of the lens breaks and lodges in your eye.
  2. You should always wear the protective headgear recommended for your sport, including helmets, face shields, and/or polycarbonate eye goggles.
  3. Do you do a lot of outdoor activity such as running or cycling? Consider prescription sunglasses or transition lenses that will give you both the vision-correction and UV-light protection you need.

Our Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach optometrists can help fit you for the most appropriate corrective and sports-safe eyewear. We can also provide comprehensive eye exams to ensure your vision is in top shape for all your athletic endeavors.
