Importance of Eye Dilation From Your Optometrist Serving Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, And Surrounding Communities

No matter what your vision needs are, it's important that you schedule a routine eye exam with an optometrist on a regular basis. At Advanced Eyecare Center, serving the South Bay communities of Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and Torrance, our optometrist team utilize eye dilation during routine eye exams as part of our advanced and comprehensive vision care services.

Why Is Eye Dilation During An Eye Exam So Important?

To effectively evaluate and ultimately diagnose certain disorders affecting your vision and eye health, your optometrist needs to be able to see inside your eyes for part of his or her routine examination. Dilating the pupil (achieved with specialized eye drops) allows our optometrists to see all the important internal structures (including the optic nerve, macula, and retina). This isn't possible on an eye exam in which the eyes are not dilated.

The better we can visualize the inside of your eyes, the easier it is for us to diagnosis several eye conditions, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, ocular tumors, and more. It also helps us detect warning signs of diseases sooner and implement early treatment, which can drastically improve your outcomes.

Does It Hurt To Have My Eyes Dilated During An Eye Exam?

Most of our patients tell us that eye dilation doesn't hurt, but it does feel a little strange. It's not unusual to have some temporary sensitivity to light and blurry vision. It typically takes upwards of 4-6 hours for the effect of the dilating eye drops to wear off, so we recommend planning ahead by bringing some sunglasses and ensuring that you have a safe way to get home after your eye exam.
