Flex Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Accounts (HSA) are a great way to save money on a pre-tax basis to meet your health care needs and expenses. As long as you use this money to pay for health care expenses, you do not pay taxes on it which saves you money when April’s tax bill comes due. If you have an FSA, the money is a use or lose it proposition. Unlike an HSA, the money you save in an FSA does not accrue from year to year. If you do not spend it, you will lose what is left, down to the last penny. Here are a few tips for utilizing vision benefits before the end of the year.
Schedule your Eye Exam with our South Bay Optometrists Before the Holidays
Sometimes we let the annual due date for our eye exam slip away. Even if you do not wear glasses or contacts, an annual examination allows our South Bay optometrists to assess the general health of your eyes. For people with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, this exam is critically important. Your vision plan will usually cover one visit per year, so do not let that benefit go to waste.
Purchase Eligible Products with Your FSA Funds
Using your flex spending funds is not limited to doctor’s visits. You can use these funds for medically eligible purchases. If you wear disposable contacts, you can stock up on a few more boxes to carry you through to next year’s appointment. Visit your eye doctor and pick out a new pair of frames and lenses. You can even pick up a pair of prescription sunglasses for the beach this coming summer. Check with your plan administrator, but most plans allow you to purchase many other items as well such as contact cleaning solution.
