The new school year is upon us, and classrooms are once again filled with children. Unfortunately, many of these children are struggling because of their vision problems. They can’t see the blackboard, write down notes, or read their textbooks.
If you suspect your child is suffering from poor eyesight, make sure to bring them to see our optometrist in Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach. We’ll help them fix their vision and start excelling in school again!
Here are three important tips for monitoring your child’s eyesight:
Watch Your Child Do Their Homework
One of the easiest ways to tell if your child is suffering from poor eyesight is observing them as they work. If they struggle reading, hold the book close to their face, or have to use their fingers to keep track of their progress, it could be a sign they need glasses. Poor handwriting is another tell-tale sign that you want to keep an eye out for.
Listen to Their Complaints Carefully
Children know when they’re having problems, even if they don’t know what the problem is. Here are some common complaints from children who need an eye exam:
- Tired or sore eyes.
- Constant headaches, especially because of light.
- Unusual trouble completing visual activities, like having a catch, coloring, or riding a bike.
Watch Them for Visual Clues
Finally, you must take the time to watch your children carefully. Many visual clues should alert you that it’s time to visit an eye doctor:
- Constant squinting or blinking.
- Tilted head when reading or watching television.
- Recurring redness in one or both eyes.
- Eyes that seem unusual, such as crossed eyes or a lazy eye.
- Habitual eye rubbing, even when they aren’t tired.
If you start noticing any of the clues above, you must consider taking your child to our Advanced Eyecare Center of Manhattan Beach and El Segundo. We’ll be able to carefully examine your child and determine which corrective vision solutions are necessary, if any. Bring your child in for an eye exam today and let our doctors help them live a normal life again!
